Careers Event:     On Friday 28th June, our wonderful Year 6 children took part in our first ever careers event, where our learners were interviewed by real life business owners for job roles across many different sectors. The event started with students attending a jobs fair to find out about the jobs on offer. They were then asked to complete an application form and a letter to support their submission. As with any other job, they then contacted the school office to arrange their interview time and date. The day started with children arriving at school dressed smartly for their interviews and a workshop from West Midlands Police who described all of the different careers available within the police force. Then, throughout the afternoon our interviewees took part in their interviews with our supportive volunteers. A huge thank you goes to Donna from Vanity, beauty, nails, tanning, Ann from Henley Green Medical Centre, Matt from Selco, Georgina from Coventry Building Society, Chloe from CVLife, Allan from Grinsell’s Home and Garden Maintenance and our incredible school governors. We look forward to running the event again next year!

Year 1 go Wild:   On Tuesday 25th June, Year 1 were very excited about their trip to All Things Wild. The children enjoyed seeing animals such as meerkats, camels, zebras and tortoises, as well as getting the opportunity to touch or hold snakes, rabbits and stick insects. They also had plenty of time to play and explored a dinosaur trail, where they spotted a life size tyrannosaurs rex, stegosaurus and triceratops. What a fun day!

Year 6 Kayakers:  On Tuesday 25th June, a group of eight Year 6 children went to Coventry’s Canal Basin to have a go at kayaking. They were first taught how to use the paddle before getting into the kayak. Next, they played games to help them control their balance on the water. After that, they went on a trip along the canal. Although some of them got caught in the bushes, they managed to untangle themselves. Finally, they got dressed in their dry clothes and returned to school – the children had a blast.

Year 2 Dentist:    On Monday 24th June, the Oral Health Team and their very naughty unicorn friend visited Year 2 to teach them about the importance of brushing their teeth twice daily, for two minutes and to use floss. The unicorn was not very good at brushing their teeth, so needed reminding about the food and drink that is helpful, as well as harmful to teeth. The children could recall how important it is to drink milk and water as well as eating fruit and vegetables. They also knew how damaging fizzy drinks, chocolates and sweets are to teeth and gums. All of the children were encouraged to visit a dentist every six months to ensure that their new adult teeth would grow strong, straight and without decay.

School Council Visit to Castle Wood:           On Monday 24th June, our Key Stage 2 School Councillors visited Castle Wood to discuss the impact of the work that they have done over this year. They were all surprised with the amount of things that they have achieved, including fundraising for local (as well as national) charities and the purchase of bins on the shared site to improve the cleanliness of the environment.

Sun Safety:  Every year we teach our children about the importance of staying safe in the sun and they learn to Slip, Slop, Slap to remain safe - Slip on a t-shirt to keep themselves covered, Slop on some sun cream and Slap on a hat to shade their face and neck. We've not had too much to worry about so far this year but are hopeful that we might all be using sun cream and sun hats soon!

3MM’s Class Assembly: We all thoroughly enjoyed 3MM’s class assembly on Friday 21st June, especially with the tension, as many of us tried to answer the “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” style questions! The children have been learning about Western Europe (Geography) and Mary Anning (History) and demonstrated that their ability to retrieve tricky information is phenomenal! Well done 3MM – it was a lovely assembly.

Hado Tournament:        On Wednesday 19th June, a group of ten Year 5 children participated in a Hado tournament. If you have never heard of Hado, neither had we! The children took part in teams of three to throw virtual bolts at their opponents to break their targets, while dodging around on a small court. The team that broke the most targets won! The group took turns to play in one of the two teams that Moat House had entered. All of the children did really well playing this new sport and were great ambassadors for Moat House. One team came fifth in their group and the other team came third. Well done to all of the children who took part!

RNLI Fundraiser: Thank you for your contributions to our fundraiser last week. As a result of our children wearing blue non uniform for the day, we managed to raise £310.06. Thank you for supporting us and our local charities.

Phonics Screening:       In the week beginning 10th June, our Year 1 (and some Year 2) children showed off their amazing reading skills in the national phonic screening assessment. They used their sounds to read real words, as well as nonsense words. They all put in lots of effort and we are very proud of them. Parents will be informed of the results at the end of the school year.

Knife Crime Session:     On Friday 14th June, Year 6 took part in a knife crime awareness workshop, which was run by the West Midlands Police. They discussed some statistics relating to knife crime incidents in The Midlands and explored some scenarios they may face as they get older, where good or bad decisions could be made. As part of the session, they also learnt about the age of criminal responsibility and some of the punishments that could be faced for committing a crime with a knife. The children were very respectful during the session and asked some thoughtful questions.

RNLI Fundraiser:         On Monday 10th June, we held an assembly all about the good work that the RNLI do to support people who get into trouble in the water. This is a charity that is particularly close to Moat House hearts as there was a tragic incident three years ago on the South coast, involving a. local young man (Callum). Callum was a true hero as he saved several members of his family when they got into difficulty in the water, but unfortunately lost his own life whilst doing so. We would like to thank everyone for supporting us in raising money for the RNLI today by wearing blue non-uniform. You are also very welcome to join Callum’s family and friends on Saturday 13th July from 11am at Pinley Rugby Club, where they will holding an event to raise money for the RNLI.

Year 6 Theatre Visit:    On Friday 7th June, our Year 6 children visited the Leicester Curve as a reward for their hard work during SATs week. They watched a performance of ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class,’ which told the story of a group of friends who meet a young refugee boy, who they are determined to help. The children were all perfectly behaved and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Because they were so intrigued by the story, some of the children have even started to read the book which the show was based upon!

Year 2 visit to Twycross Zoo:

On Thursday 6th June, Year 2 enjoyed a trip to Twycross Zoo to support their learning in science this year. The children looked closely at the different habitats created for the animals at the zoo and discussed whether the animals were omnivores, carnivores or herbivores. A great time was had by all! Kyrese had the shock of his life when a monkey swung into the screen in front of him and Luke loved watching the penguins swim in their pool.   Michaela said, 'The butterflies were so beautiful, they were flying around our heads'. Our special day was topped off by a dip in the Wet 'n' Wild play area. We had some tired explorers by the end of the day. Well done to all of the children for their incredible behaviour and representing our school so wonderfully.

    Year 6 First Aid:

On Thursday 6th June, our Year 6 children took part in a first aid workshop. They were taught about what first aid is and how they can help, if someone needs medical assistance. They were shown how to help if they come across someone who is unconscious and were introduced to a useful acronym to help in this type of situation – DR ABC (danger, response, airways, breathing, call). They also participated in a practical session, whereby they practised resuscitation on a dummy. Useful numbers and their purposes were also explained to the children ie: 999 for an emergency and 111 for medical advice (which is not an emergency).

Deputy Lord Mayor Visit:  On Thursday 23rd May, we were lucky enough to be visited by the Deputy Lord Mayor (soon to be Lord Mayor of Coventry – Councillor Mutton). She joined us to watch 2BD’s class assembly, enjoyed a tour of the school and even participated in our School Council meeting – we were reliably informed that the children were much better behaved than the representatives at the Council House in Coventry!

RNLI Fundraiser:         As part of our School Council meeting on Thursday 23rd May, we welcomed Samantha, Sue, Anne and Danielle, who talked to us about the fundraising that they are leading in order to support the RNLI after 18 year old family member, Callum sadly passed away in a tragedy at sea, in 2021. They are holding a fundraising event on Saturday 13th July at Pinley Rugby Club at 11 am, where there will be various fun activities and prizes, for all of the family – everyone is welcome! We will also be holding a non-uniform day on Friday 14th June, in order to support this cause.

2BD’s Class Assembly:   On Thursday 23rd May, we enjoyed watching 2BD’s class assembly and were amazed by the children’s depth of knowledge about the different planets of the solar system. The children have also been finding out about the continents of the world and learnt some interesting facts to help remember the names. They were full of enthusiasm whilst singing the songs that have helped them to learn so much and the children (and adults!) across the school couldn’t help but join in!

Recorder Assembly: On Wednesday 22nd May, we were treated to a special assembly led by Miss Sinclair, who has been teaching our Year 4 children how to play the recorder. We were surprised to find out that the children had only started learning the instrument in January but were very proficient and were able to play along to some familiar songs including Eye of the Tiger and We will Rock You. Parents and children alike enjoyed this special assembly.

Online Safety:   On Tuesday 21st May, Year 5 and 6 were visited by two PCSOs for an assembly about online safety. The children were taught about the steps that they should put in place to ensure they stay safe when online, especially when they are using apps and taking part in online gaming. They also had the opportunity to ask the PCSOs any questions or share any concerns that they had about staying safe online.

Tour de France: The school football team returned to Coventry after a very enjoyable tournament in Hordain, France in the early hours of Tuesday morning (21st May). The team did brilliantly and finished 9th out of 20 teams, having played against some very competitive European teams. They won all three of their matches on the second day, including knocking out the host team in a penalty shootout! The children especially enjoyed experiencing European culture by staying with host families, which included them tasting local cuisine and trying to communicate in a mixture of English and French.
