Focus on our Future
Year 6 Aspirations: Some of our Year 6 children participated in an Aspirations workshop at Little Heath Primary School on Tuesday 4th March. The workshops included Severn Trent Water, a construction company, the Armed Forces, as well as the Prince’s Trust. The workshops gave the children the opportunity to listen to stories and achievements and they were able to ask questions about potential future careers. The children all came away feeling very inspired! Another fifteen children visited Warwick University to learn more about university life. First, they participated in an engineering workshop, where they had to build the tallest tower they could out of paper. The tower had to have a working light at the top so it required a lot of problem-solving to ensure the circuit was long enough! After that, the children learnt about different aspects of university, including the range of courses and societies available to them. They were given the opportunity to ask current university students questions about the application process and their subjects. They ended the day with a tour of the campus and completed a sculpture trail to see the lovely artwork in the area. Overall, the children had a great day and are excited about the prospect of going to university in the future!
Veloce Racing
We are proud to have been approached by Veloce Racing to interview one of their racing drivers (Kevin Hansen) in November 2024 to help them to make a promotional video. The children enjoyed learning interview techniques and were especially interested in finding out how they could become racing car drivers themselves in the future! See the finished product below....
Careers Event: On Friday 28th June, our wonderful Year 6 children took part in our first ever careers event, where our learners were interviewed by real life business owners for job roles across many different sectors. The event started with students attending a jobs fair to find out about the jobs on offer. They were then asked to complete an application form and a letter to support their submission. As with any other job, they then contacted the school office to arrange their interview time and date. The day started with children arriving at school dressed smartly for their interviews and a workshop from West Midlands Police who described all of the different careers available within the police force. Then, throughout the afternoon our interviewees took part in their interviews with our supportive volunteers. A huge thank you goes to Donna from Vanity, beauty, nails, tanning, Ann from Henley Green Medical Centre, Matt from Selco, Georgina from Coventry Building Society, Chloe from CVLife, Allan from Grinsell’s Home and Garden Maintenance and our incredible school governors. We look forward to running the event again next year!
Year 6 Warwick University Visit: On Thursday 11th April, thirty Year 6 pupils visited Warwick University to take part in a Lego robotics workshop. This involved writing codes to make a robot perform certain actions (such as speeding up, slowing down, turning or making sounds) when their sensors spotted different things. To do this, the children had to create some tricky algorithms and repair them when they didn't work correctly. After this, the children were taught all about university life and took part in a question and answer session with some student ambassadors. To finish the day, the children were taken on a tour of the university. Everyone had a great day and all of the children are now very excited to go to university when they grow up! Well done Year 6.
Key Stage 2 Engineering: Our Year 4, 5 and 6 children enjoyed a visit from Warwick University’s Engineering Team on Wednesday 20th March and explored lots of different aspects of engineering and how it influences everyday life. Years 4 and 5 got involved in a range of experiments, including generating electricity with their bare hands and making submarines sink and float. Year 6 enjoyed coding to create their own unique pieces of machine embroidery. All of the children had a fantastic time, and many would now like to become engineers themselves!
Kapsch Careers Talk: We were fortunate to have a visit from Shari, a Business Manager at Kapsch on Friday 2nd February. They are responsible for the software that manages smart motorways and a variety of other traffic solutions, eg traffic lights 'knowing' when to change as a car approaches and early warning of accidents on roads which allow Satnavs to suggest alternative routes. Shari explained how an interest in IT and coding could lead to someone working as a software engineer or coder at companies like Kapsch. KS2 children listened with interest as she described the jobs that are available at Kapsch and what children would need to study at primary and secondary school to prepare them for a job in IT.
