The Hive

In September 2023, we identified the need for an adapted provision to support the growing number of EYFS and KS1 children we have who have significant needs and have (or are likely to get) an EHC Plan. These children have needs which are challenging to address within a classroom alongside another 29 children and benefit from having more space and intensive support. As there was no space available within the school site to set up this provision we approached the interim director of Social Services and proposed to make use of one of the rooms that was used by The Moat Family Hub, who share the building with us. He spoke with the Early Help Operational Lead at Coventry City Council who is responsible for the Family Hubs across the city and set up a meeting between her and the school. Fast forward 12 months and we have now got the use of one of the rooms which was previously used for early years provision; this has its own toilets and outdoor space. We recruited a teacher with extensive experience of working in special schools and two TAs to support her and now offer up to ten of our EYFS and KS1 children with EHCPs the opportunity to spend part of their school day in The Hive. We have been supported by the headteacher from a local special school who has given us suggestions as to how we can maximise its use for the benefit of our children and they are thriving as a result.
