Bikeability

What is Bikeability?

Bikeability is the government's national cycle training programme. By completing the programme, it helps children to learn practical skills and understand how to cycle on today's roads. Bikeability gives everyone the confidence to cycle and enjoy this skill for life.

Bikeability at Moat House 2025-26

Year 5 have started their bikeability sessions this week and although they were unable to take part in any practical sessions (due to the weather) they were taught about some of the safety and maintenance checks that they should do before riding a bike. These included checking that the tyres are roadworthy and that the brakes work. They were also taught that they should always mount the bike from the left hand side to keep them away from moving traffic.

Bikeability Update Written by Cole

In Bikeability, we got given bikes from how tall we are and there were three teachers. One took the people who could ride a bike and the other two took the people who couldn’t ride a bike. Most of the people who coul dn’t ride a bike can now. Luckily, no-one fell off their bike. Further into the lessons, we will ride out of school. There are three groups that go at different times. The first group goes before break, the second group goes after break and the third group goes bef ore lunch. Everyone had fun

Bikeability at Moat House 2024-25

Our Year 5 pupils enjoyed their Bikeability training during the spring term. The sessions involved the children learning how to safely get on and off a bike, how to push themselves off to start riding and how to ride a bike correctly. For the more confident bike riders, an explanation of how to signal before turning was given and the children then had the chance to try out the skill. Throughout the half term, the children have gained confidence using two wheels, boosted their cycling skills and, for our more confident riders, have been learning how to cycle safely on the roads.
