5JK’s Assembly:      Thank you to 5JK who shared a wonderful assembly on Friday 22nd March all about Australia. They shared some fascinating information, including that 10% of all the world’s fish live in the Great Barrier Reef, as well as the fact that there is so much desert in Australia that it appears red from space! We all enjoyed listening to an extract of an aboriginal playing a didgeridoo and the children did a super job of singing the national anthem, Advance Australia Fair.

Book Fair:      Our Book Fair was collected on Wednesday 20th March and we would like to thank you all for visiting and purchasing books for your children to enjoy. As an additional bonus, the school will receive a percentage of the total number of books purchased, to buy more books for our school library. Happy reading everyone!

Key Stage 2 Engineering:     Our Year 4, 5 and 6 children enjoyed a visit from Warwick University’s Engineering Team on Wednesday 20th March and explored lots of different aspects of engineering and how it influences everyday life. Years 4 and 5 got involved in a range of experiments, including generating electricity with their bare hands and making submarines sink and float. Year 6 enjoyed coding to create their own unique pieces of machine embroidery. All of the children had a fantastic time, and many would now like to become engineers themselves!

Rocksteady:   We were privileged to watch the first live performances from our five rock bands on Tuesday 19th March. Children from Reception through to Year 6 played or sang to us and they were all brilliant! Each group had drums, bass, guitar, keyboards and vocals and the children showed how much they have learned since starting in January. I’m already looking forward to the Summer concert!

Parents’ Evening: Thank you to those people who were able to attend parents’ evening in the week commencing 18th March. If you were unable to see your child’s teacher, please don’t hesitate to request a separate appointment, either via the school office or by speaking to your child’s class teacher.

Year 4 Camping:         On Thursday 14th March, there were lots of excited Year 4 children because they had the opportunity to stay overnight at school in tents. Despite the rain, the children all had a wonderful time playing torch tig, hide and seek with the highlight of the evening being a camp fire where they enjoyed s’mores.

Year 3 Music Workshop:         On Wednesday 13th March, Year 3 took part in Coventry Music's Creature Cantata II - a singing festival for local Schools - at Coventry Central Hall. They have been working hard this term to learn ten songs which celebrate nature and the animal kingdom. In the afternoon, the children participated in a workshop, alongside children from other schools. In the evening, the children then sang to an audience, accompanied by a live band! The children had a fantastic day and sang beautifully. Thank you very much to the parents who were able to come and watch the performance. Mark Steele, who organised the event, complimented our children’s singing and behaviour.

Severn Trent Assembly: On Wednesday 13th March, the children learnt a lot from a Super Sewers assembly, led by Beth from Severn Trent Water. Beth talked to the children in an interactive way about what should and shouldn’t be put down the toilet or down the sink. They introduced a memorable phrase to the children: “don’t be a blocker, be a binner,” which will hopefully keep all of our toilets and drains, at home and school, clear from problems.

Year 5 Visit to Grace Academy: On Tuesday 12th March, Year 5 were fortunate enough to visit Grace Academy to watch their students in a performance of Matilda. They all represented Moat House brilliantly and were treated to an Easter egg hunt, as a reward for their excellent work!

Mothers’ Day:      Thank you to all of the children who visited the pop up Mothers’ day shop in the week commencing 4th March - this was a huge success and the children enjoyed choosing a special gift for their loved ones. On Friday 8th March, many of you will have taken part in our Mothers’ Day afternoon tea and enjoyed quality time in school with your children.

World Book Day: On Thursday 7th March, children (and staff) were invited to dress up as a word or book character to acknowledge World Book Day. There were lots of inventive ideas including Theo (Year 3) dressed as cool, Evie (Year 4) dressed as creative and Zack (Year 6) dressed as injured. The staff also made a great effort – Miss Wilson was colourful and Miss Maxwell was Mr Bump. The children began the day by listening to a story read by a different teacher and there were various other book related activities for the children to enjoy throughout the day. This included, the children in Key Stage 1 going on a book hunt and the children in Year 2 making bear toast, after hearing the story, Bear Likes Jam.

Careers Week:      Several Year 6 children had the opportunity to attend careers information talks this week. A group went to Alderman's Green school for a session with Tech She Can, a charity who work to improve the ratio of women working in technology roles. We then welcomed children from Potter's Green and St Laurence’s, who joined us on Thursday 7th March for talks from a transport safety officer, the National Grid, Coventry Music Service and a farmer. The children then shared the information with the rest of Year 6. The speakers all commented on how well behaved the children were and what insightful questions they asked.

Fourteen girls from Year 6 had the opportunity to take part in a workshop called 'Tech She Can' on Wednesday 6th March. During the workshop, the children learnt about a range of jobs that involve technology such as animators, special effects editors, app/gaming developers, programming, making flying cars and planning drone light shows. They even had the chance to play with the 'Sphero Student Kit' for coding a robot named Indi, which they all thoroughly enjoyed. The children were also introduced to an app called 'Quiver Vision' which allows you to create your own augmented reality character. Everybody had an amazing morning at the workshop and some of the girls are even planning to get a job in technology when they're older!

1ET Class Assembly:         On Wednesday 6th March, we enjoyed a super assembly by 1ET, who have been learning all about the earth and how pollution and litter is damaging our environment and what we can do to make it better. They ended their assembly with a lovely song – “What a Wonderful World.”

5LM’s Class Assembly: On Friday 1st March, we enjoyed 5LM’s class assembly – the children have been learning all about the French Revolution and how this historical event enabled the people of France today, to enjoy liberty and equality. Asher and Marafi played King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, whilst Bogdan was a very dramatic Napoleon. Thanks to 5LM – you have clearly learnt a lot on this topic.

3SHG’s Class Assembly:    Thank you 3SHG for sharing the story of The Barnabus Project with us on Wednesday 28th March. This was all about creatures being valued as individuals, despite their differences. As well as retelling the story, the children shared some of the non-chronological reports which they had written about it, as well as some of the key messages about having a positive mind, being proud of who we are and not being afraid to make mistakes. They finished off by singing 'This is Me' which was so popular they repeated it at the end!

Safety Seymour in Year 2: Safety Seymour is a fun and colourful character who has an important message to share about gas safety in the home, and the dangers of Carbon Monoxide (or CO) poisoning in particular. The session (on Wednesday 28th March) focused on educating children in a fun and engaging way on the dangers of carbon monoxide, what the symptoms are and also how to stay carbon monoxide safe. All of our children were fortunate enough to take home a carbon monoxide alarm, safety certificate and keyring with the contact number for families to call if they have any concerns around carbon monoxide in the home. Additional information can be found via www.safetyseymour.co.uk

Life Skills Curriculum: Changes have been made to enhance our PSHE and SRE curriculum. At Moat House, our young people will now learn ‘Life Skills’ which has nine areas of learning; Safety, Feelings and Mental Health, Bullying and Discrimination, Relationships, Community and Respect, Physical Health, Money and Careers, Digital Safety and Growing and Changing. All of our lessons will be based around story books to support children’s learning and their understanding of all areas of our new curriculum. We aim for pupils to know how to be safe and healthy as well as how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way!
