Black History Month:         Thank you to everyone who has supported us celebrating the end of Black History Month by dressing in black (resilience), red (love), yellow (optimism) and justice/fairness (green = greenery/nature). There were many children also dressed in traditional clothing and it was wonderful to see so many cultures reflected throughout the school on Thursday 24th October.

Read Write Inc:   Thank you to those parents who came in to school to learn about how we teach our children to read. On Wednesday 16th October, the expert Caroline Carter from Read Write Inc spoke to Reception parents about the principles of the scheme. On Thursday 24th October, our Year 1 parents were informed about the statutory phonics screening test, which will happen in June and they were able to watch Read Write Inc in action with their own children. We hope it was helpful and hope that you can support your children with their reading at home, as a result. Here is a link for useful resources that you could purchase to support your child: https://www.amazon.co.uk/read-write-inc/s?k=read+write+inc

Dodgeball:          On Wednesday 23rd October, a group of Year 5 children were selected to take part in a values-based dodgeball competition at the AT7 centre. When they arrived, they were given the name of 'Moat house Giants'. There were nineteen teams from different schools across the city of which Moat house Giants competed against four of them. After they had finished a game, the children shook hands with the opposing team and then scored the opposition based on the following values: teamwork, honesty and respect. At the end of the morning there was a presentation where all children were awarded with a certificate for taking part. Moat House Giants demonstrated great team work, respect and honesty during each game! The children enjoyed every minute of it with smiles on their faces and were great ambassadors for Moat House! Thank you and well done to Hishaam, Yekta, Zuzanna, Laila, Kian, Del'Fariah, Maimuna and Olivia for representing our school!

Football Winners: Moat House welcomed St Patrick’s football team on Wednesday 16th October and they played their first football match of the season. The match started with both teams passing well and causing each other problems. The deadlock was opened by Bradley with a smart finish and was quickly followed by two goals from Max. Another Bradley finish made it 4:0 at halftime. Bradley and Max both completed their hat tricks in the second half with Alex chipping in with a couple of goals.  Final score 8:0 - what a great start to the season!

Dodgeball Success:           On Wednesday 16th October, a group of seven Year 4 children attended a values based dodgeball competition at the AT7 Centre. When they arrived, they were given a team name which was 'Moat House Tigers'. There were a total of nineteen different teams at the competition and each school played against four different teams. After playing against a team, the children scored the opposition based on the following values: teamwork, honesty and respect. At the end of the morning, there was a presentation with a medal ceremony for the top three scoring teams. Amazingly, the Moat House Tigers came third place and each child was presented with a certificate and a bronze medal! The children were incredible ambassadors for Moat House Primary School and demonstrated our own school values throughout the whole competition. Well done to Jaffary, Shreenav, Mercedes, Leo M, Cole, Omniya and Sofia for this amazing achievement!

6ST’s Class Assembly:   We enjoyed a wonderful assembly on Friday 11th October, based on the class novel that 6ST have been reading entitled “The Nowhere Emporium.” The children shared how the shop in the story is magical and can travel through time with lots of interesting and exciting characters. The children can’t wait to find out how the story unfolds and they ended their assembly with a very catchy song based on the 1980s song Abracadabra. Thanks 6ST – we really enjoyed your assembly!

Attendance Rewards: To encourage our children to engage with attending school every day, we are currently holding a contest whereby the year group classes are in competition with each other to earn money. Each week, the class with the highest attendance in the year group earns £1. In addition, if a class achieves 100% they will earn £5. This school year, 3ML have already had a week where they achieved 100% attendance, so their money pot is the highest in the school at the moment. Let’s see which class will be the next to achieve 100% attendance! Towards the end of the year, the children will discuss with their teachers how to spend the total amount of prize money. Good luck!

Fundraising: As a result of our Macmillan Coffee Morning, as well as the break time cake sales, we managed to raise a grand total of £529.05. Thank you very much for all your support in raising money for this fantastic charity.

5JK’s Class Assembly:   It was lovely for parents and children to watch our first class assembly of the year on Friday 4th October. Thanks to 5JK, who led a very topical assembly about harvest; many of us learnt that there are harvest events all around the world. It was a good reminder for us to be thankful for the food that we have and to donate or volunteer where we can eg: to food banks or supermarket collections.

Year 1’s Local Walk:     On Thursday 3rd October, Year 1 classes enjoyed a local walk as part of their geography learning. They became cartographers (map makers) and created their own maps. These included symbols that the children had chosen. They learnt the importance of maps being accurate and enjoyed making more maps on the return to school.

Black History Month:     October signifies the start of Black History Month. In school, we have been discussing why it is important to participate in Black History Month through the ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ campaign. Throughout the school, children have been be researching different significant individuals of black origin, who have overcome racism and adversity to achieve great things in sport, science, human and civil rights and performing arts.
