Last Week's News 27th Sept 24
Mon 30 Sep 2024Macmillan Coffee Morning: Thank you to all of our parents, family and friends, who attended our coffee morning on Friday 27th September and ensured that it was a great success. The children did not miss out on the cake sale and enjoyed buying a cake (or two) to support Macmillan during the day. We will let you know how much we have managed to raise in a future newsletter.
Parents’ Evening: Thank you to everyone who attended the ‘settling in’ parents’ evening on Thursday 26th September. It is important that we meet with you throughout the year so that we can update you with your child’s life at school.
Visit to Parliament: On Wednesday 25th September, last year’s School Council members enjoyed a trip to London, where they experienced a boat trip along the River Thames and had fun spotting some famous landmarks, including Tower Bridge and Big Ben. Following this, they were treated to a tour of the Houses of Parliament, where they were even allowed to enter the Houses of Lords and Commons. They learnt many interesting facts and were fascinated to learn that the King is not allowed to enter the House of Commons! The children behaved beautifully throughout the day and were a real credit to Moat House.
Year 2 Local Walk: On Tuesday 24th September, Year 2 enjoyed a walk around the local area. The children identified both physical and human features which linked nicely to our geography topic. We even encountered some flooding of a field as a result of the heavy rainfall which sparked some discussions! Our next steps will be to record our walk in our English topic when writing a recount. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area and look forward to more trips in the future.
Early Mental Health Assembly: On Tuesday 24th September, we welcomed Amanda in from Compass Shine who spoke to our children about emotional wellbeing. She introduced a character, called Sam and shared how his emotions changed throughout the day, depending on what was happening eg: he was excited about seeing his friend at school but became disappointed when his friend was poorly. He then became happy again when he received an invitation to a party. Amanda explained that it is normal to experience several different emotions over a day. Amanda also gave the children some ideas about what they could do if their emotions change.

Tue 24 Sep 2024MP Visit: On Thursday 19th September, we welcomed our local MP, Mary Creagh into school. She was keen to meet our School Councillors (from last year) who are excited about their trip to Parliament. Our children had lots of questions for her about her job and what to look out for in Parliament. She was also keen to meet our parents and carers and we hope that you had a positive interaction with her if you met her out and about on the playground yesterday afternoon.

Message from the Police: Recently we have noticed an increase in burglaries in Coventry. There has been a rise in incidents during school drop off and pick up times most specifically. Our ask is for all parents to be extra vigilant and to utilise all methods they can to deter and prevent this from happening to them. If you spot anyone acting suspiciously, please call the Police on 101 for non-emergency or 999, if urgent. Mon 16 Sep 2024Clubs: You will have received a letter giving details of a wide range of after school clubs available for your child. These include: football, gymnastics, arts and crafts and nature. You will need to sign up for a club using the My Child at School app.
Macmillan Coffee Morning: On Friday 20th September, we will be holding a non-uniform day in exchange for a donation of shop bought cakes (which will need to be in date and edible for at least a week). Please also ensure that they do not contain nuts. The following week (Friday 27th September), we will be participating in the national Macmillan coffee morning. Parents, carers, relatives and friends are invited to join us in the school dining area from 9:00 am – 10:00 am, to enjoy a coffee (or tea) and a cake for a small donation. Our children, of course, will not be missing out - there will be a cake sale during the day, so children are invited to bring along 20p to buy a cake. We look forward to welcoming you in school and we would like to thank you for supporting us to raise money for the fabulous work that the Macmillan nurses do.
Jewellery: Just a reminder that the only jewellery which children are allowed to wear at school are stud earrings and watches (as long as they are not smart watches).

Mon 09 Sep 2024Welcome Back: It was great to see the children back in school on Tuesday and I hope that they have all enjoyed their first few days in their new classes. They were all very smartly dressed and looked wonderful! The Year 6 children looked especially grown up in their new black sweatshirts and seem ready to take on the mantle of being role models for the rest of the school. I am looking forward to another exciting year at Moat House and look forward to meeting you at Parents’ Evening, class assemblies or on the playground at the start or end of the school day.
New Start Time: Thanks to you all for getting your child/ren in to school before our new bell time of 8.45am. Starting at this time means that our school day now matches the government requirements.

Healthy Food and Drink: Please remember to bring a named water bottle to school every day for your child. Children can drink water throughout the day and refill their bottle at school. Please do not send your child into school with any other drink eg: squash or fizzy drinks. Also a reminder that children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 have access to healthy snacks on a daily basis. Key Stage 2 children are welcome to bring in healthy snacks at playtime, as long as they don’t contain nuts.
Asda Rewards: If you shop at Asda and have the Asda rewards app on your phone, can you please nominate us in the Cashpot for schools section. They will then make a donation to us for every pound spent on shopping. Please also ask friends and relatives to do the same. Any money raised will be spent directly on the children. The promotion lasts until the end of November and it takes less than a minute to nominate us.
School Bank: On Tuesday 10th September, the Moat House School Bank will be open once again for anyone who wishes to make a deposit or a withdrawal. Many of our children have now opened accounts and are saving hard for things like spending money for their holidays or Christmas presents. If your child would like to begin saving using the School Bank, please complete an application form and bring your first deposit along to the bank, which is open every Tuesday morning at 8:35 am. Forms are available from the school office.
Gifts: On behalf of all of the staff I'd like to say thank you for all the cards, gifts and kind words that you gave us at the end of the Summer Term. Everything was greatly appreciated.

Mon 02 Sep 2024Summer Wishes: I’d like to wish our Year 6 children ‘all the best’ as they move on to their new schools in September and I hope that you all have a very happy and safe summer and look forward to seeing you all again on Tuesday 3rd September (remember doors will now open 5 minutes earlier at 8.35am and registers will be done at 8.45am – our new start time.
Year 6 Party: To celebrate the end of their time at Moat House, Year 6 attended a summer themed leavers' party on Thursday 18th July. All children were given a Hawaiian-style flower garland and sunglasses to finish off their beach party outfits. They enjoyed dancing the night away to their favourite songs and posing for photos in the photo booth. As well as enjoying their disco, they also had a bouncy castle, which was a big hit! All of the children had a fantastic time and we hope it was a great way to finish off their final week at primary school.
Tea in the Park: On Wednesday 17th July, we invited children to come into school in non-uniform in exchange for a contribution to the charities of the University Hospital in Walsgrave. Parents were also invited to join us and their children for afternoon tea on the school field. This was a great success and everyone had a lovely time – we even saw the sunshine for the afternoon! We managed to raise £202.05 so thank you to everyone who supported us!
Year 6 Performance: On Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th July, our Year 6 children performed their Leavers’ performance “A Hint of Snow White” to a proud audience of friends and family. The children did a fantastic job of not only remembering their lines but also their stage positions. The singing was also incredible with some very brave soloists. Mariana and Dotun deserve special mentions as they were extremely convincing in their roles of the evil queen and the carpenter.
EYFS trip to Twin Lakes: On Tuesday 16th July, Nursery and Reception enjoyed a visit to Twin Lakes, where they experienced the thrills of the rides, a farm, soft play, climbing frames, as well as the water park. Not surprisingly, the water park was the firm favourite, as the children not only enjoyed the slides but were extremely excited to be able to soak their teachers! All of the children were very well behaved and had a fantastic time. Thank you to all the staff and parents who came and supported us on this trip.
Rock Steady Concert: On Tuesday 16th July, we enjoyed a star performance from our rock bands: The Black Dogs, The Superstars, The Metal Wasps and Ashy Smoke. Children from Year 1 through to Year 6 played or sang to us and they were all brilliant! We were all singing along to Shut Up and Dance, Never Gonna Give You Up, Firework and Roar. Thanks to Sophie, Will and Elise who are the Rock Steady crew and taught and supported our children.

Doors will now open at 8:35am with registration at 8:45am. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
Governors’ Awards: On Thursday 11th July, a special ceremony was held to recognise children at Moat House, who have worked hard or shown good behaviour or attitude during the Summer term. The following children were awarded with a certificate and a voucher, in front of a very proud audience of parents, governors and staff, for their hard work and achievements.

Sports Day: Sports day was held on Thursday 11th July and all of the children competed to earn points for their houses in a range of activities, including discus, javelin and an obstacle course. As well as thoroughly enjoying the event, the children behaved brilliantly and this was complimented upon by Beth (our sports coach) who visits other schools and rated Moat House as being exemplary. We would like to say a huge thank you to parents, carers, friends and family for coming along to support the children and especially our Year 6 children who did a super job of supporting the younger children to ensure that the events ran smoothly.
Recorder Concert Our Year 3 children performed for their parents and carers on Wednesday 10th July; some of the other KS2 classes were also in the audience. They played a few pieces as a whole year group and a few in individual classes. The children were magnificent and a real credit to their music teacher (Miss Sinclair). We were all singing Eye of the Tiger for the rest of the afternoon!

Mon 08 Jul 2024Year 1 Visit the Library: Year 1 classes have been visiting Bell Green Library to explore books and activities. They have been given the option to open their own library card, which allows them to borrow books as they wish. The children all chose a book to borrow and we will be returning it on our next visit. The children were also introduced to a special Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children to visit a library three times and read six books. You can visit any library - it doesn't have to be in Bell Green. If you complete this, you will be awarded with a special medal and certificate, so make sure you plan in some library visits over the summer holidays. Remember this is for all ages and it is totally free of charge! Happy reading!

Year 5’s Busy Week: Many of the Year 5 children had a brilliant time in Derbyshire in the week commencing 1st July (and mostly managed to avoid the rain) whilst taking part in lots of outdoor fun and activities. Apart from the excitement of sharing a room with their friends, the highlight of the trip was the low ropes course at Conkers but the children enjoyed all of the activities, including a seven kilometre nature walk. On Tuesday 2nd July, the Year 5 children who did not attend the residential trip in Derbyshire made their way to Go Ape at Coombe Abbey. Although many children were initially nervous about the height of the activity, they were all very brave and the majority managed to complete the activity on the highest level! We were all very impressed with the resilience they showed when they found the tasks difficult and with their impeccable behaviour. Two children who stood out during the trip were Kasey and Jamal who effortlessly made their way around the course with no fear and even encouraged others to have a go at the more challenging parts! Well done Year 5.

Mon 24 Jun 2024Careers Event: On Friday 28th June, our wonderful Year 6 children took part in our first ever careers event, where our learners were interviewed by real life business owners for job roles across many different sectors. The event started with students attending a jobs fair to find out about the jobs on offer. They were then asked to complete an application form and a letter to support their submission. As with any other job, they then contacted the school office to arrange their interview time and date. The day started with children arriving at school dressed smartly for their interviews and a workshop from West Midlands Police who described all of the different careers available within the police force. Then, throughout the afternoon our interviewees took part in their interviews with our supportive volunteers. A huge thank you goes to Donna from Vanity, beauty, nails, tanning, Ann from Henley Green Medical Centre, Matt from Selco, Georgina from Coventry Building Society, Chloe from CVLife, Allan from Grinsell’s Home and Garden Maintenance and our incredible school governors. We look forward to running the event again next year!
Year 1 go Wild: On Tuesday 25th June, Year 1 were very excited about their trip to All Things Wild. The children enjoyed seeing animals such as meerkats, camels, zebras and tortoises, as well as getting the opportunity to touch or hold snakes, rabbits and stick insects. They also had plenty of time to play and explored a dinosaur trail, where they spotted a life size tyrannosaurs rex, stegosaurus and triceratops. What a fun day!
Year 6 Kayakers: On Tuesday 25th June, a group of eight Year 6 children went to Coventry’s Canal Basin to have a go at kayaking. They were first taught how to use the paddle before getting into the kayak. Next, they played games to help them control their balance on the water. After that, they went on a trip along the canal. Although some of them got caught in the bushes, they managed to untangle themselves. Finally, they got dressed in their dry clothes and returned to school – the children had a blast.
Year 2 Dentist: On Monday 24th June, the Oral Health Team and their very naughty unicorn friend visited Year 2 to teach them about the importance of brushing their teeth twice daily, for two minutes and to use floss. The unicorn was not very good at brushing their teeth, so needed reminding about the food and drink that is helpful, as well as harmful to teeth. The children could recall how important it is to drink milk and water as well as eating fruit and vegetables. They also knew how damaging fizzy drinks, chocolates and sweets are to teeth and gums. All of the children were encouraged to visit a dentist every six months to ensure that their new adult teeth would grow strong, straight and without decay.
School Council Visit to Castle Wood: On Monday 24th June, our Key Stage 2 School Councillors visited Castle Wood to discuss the impact of the work that they have done over this year. They were all surprised with the amount of things that they have achieved, including fundraising for local (as well as national) charities and the purchase of bins on the shared site to improve the cleanliness of the environment.

Mon 24 Jun 2024Sun Safety: Every year we teach our children about the importance of staying safe in the sun and they learn to Slip, Slop, Slap to remain safe - Slip on a t-shirt to keep themselves covered, Slop on some sun cream and Slap on a hat to shade their face and neck. We've not had too much to worry about so far this year but are hopeful that we might all be using sun cream and sun hats soon!
3MM’s Class Assembly: We all thoroughly enjoyed 3MM’s class assembly on Friday 21st June, especially with the tension, as many of us tried to answer the “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” style questions! The children have been learning about Western Europe (Geography) and Mary Anning (History) and demonstrated that their ability to retrieve tricky information is phenomenal! Well done 3MM – it was a lovely assembly.
Hado Tournament: On Wednesday 19th June, a group of ten Year 5 children participated in a Hado tournament. If you have never heard of Hado, neither had we! The children took part in teams of three to throw virtual bolts at their opponents to break their targets, while dodging around on a small court. The team that broke the most targets won! The group took turns to play in one of the two teams that Moat House had entered. All of the children did really well playing this new sport and were great ambassadors for Moat House. One team came fifth in their group and the other team came third. Well done to all of the children who took part!
RNLI Fundraiser: Thank you for your contributions to our fundraiser last week. As a result of our children wearing blue non uniform for the day, we managed to raise £310.06. Thank you for supporting us and our local charities.

Mon 17 Jun 2024Phonics Screening: In the week beginning 10th June, our Year 1 (and some Year 2) children showed off their amazing reading skills in the national phonic screening assessment. They used their sounds to read real words, as well as nonsense words. They all put in lots of effort and we are very proud of them. Parents will be informed of the results at the end of the school year.
Knife Crime Session: On Friday 14th June, Year 6 took part in a knife crime awareness workshop, which was run by the West Midlands Police. They discussed some statistics relating to knife crime incidents in The Midlands and explored some scenarios they may face as they get older, where good or bad decisions could be made. As part of the session, they also learnt about the age of criminal responsibility and some of the punishments that could be faced for committing a crime with a knife. The children were very respectful during the session and asked some thoughtful questions.
RNLI Fundraiser: On Monday 10th June, we held an assembly all about the good work that the RNLI do to support people who get into trouble in the water. This is a charity that is particularly close to Moat House hearts as there was a tragic incident three years ago on the South coast, involving a. local young man (Callum). Callum was a true hero as he saved several members of his family when they got into difficulty in the water, but unfortunately lost his own life whilst doing so. We would like to thank everyone for supporting us in raising money for the RNLI today by wearing blue non-uniform. You are also very welcome to join Callum’s family and friends on Saturday 13th July from 11am at Pinley Rugby Club, where they will holding an event to raise money for the RNLI.
Year 6 Theatre Visit: On Friday 7th June, our Year 6 children visited the Leicester Curve as a reward for their hard work during SATs week. They watched a performance of ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class,’ which told the story of a group of friends who meet a young refugee boy, who they are determined to help. The children were all perfectly behaved and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Because they were so intrigued by the story, some of the children have even started to read the book which the show was based upon!
