Last Week's News 14th March 25
Mon 17 Mar 20251RW’s Class Assembly: We were treated to a wonderful class assembly on Friday 14th March from 1RW, who focussed on the reading opportunities they have recently enjoyed – these have included dressing up as book characters for World Book Day and a visit to the local library. While they were at the library, they enjoyed a music workshop about the book “Rumble in the Jungle.” As part of their learning in music, they have also been learning some challenging Italian words including mezzo forte, which means medium quiet and fortissimo, which means very loud. Thanks 1RW – we really enjoyed your assembly.
Year 3 Science Workshop: In keeping with this year’s British Science Week theme, ‘Change and Adapt’, Year 3 participated in an online LIVE workshop on Wednesday 12th March, which taught them about animal adaptation and climate change fighting innovation. The children explored all the ways that animals and crops are adapted to their habitats here in Britain and all the ways that British farmers are adapting their practice to fight against climate change. The children were especially lucky because they got to see a baby calf being born while they were watching!

Mon 10 Mar 2025World Book Day: Our children had a great time dressing up as book characters for World Book Day on Thursday 6th March– thank you, parents and carers, for your support with this. Teachers went to different classes to read their favourite stories to children and everyone enjoyed the focus on reading for pleasure.
Highly Sprung in Year 4: On Wednesday 5th and Friday 7th March,, Year 4 participated in a Physical Theatre workshop with Highly Sprung. The children learnt that Physical Theatre is a mix of dance movements, acting and spoken words to tell a story. They played lots of different movements games which they thoroughly enjoyed but their favourite game to play was named zombie! They created freeze frame sticky shapes to retell sections of the story of The Three Little Pigs. The children were taught a series of partner lifts which were then incorporated into their final performance: a retelling of The Three Little Pigs. The children showed a great level of enthusiasm throughout the workshop and they thoroughly enjoyed it!
Year 6 Aspirations: Some of our Year 6 children participated in an Aspirations workshop at Little Heath Primary School on Tuesday 4th March. The workshops included Severn Trent Water, a construction company, the Armed Forces, as well as the Prince’s Trust. The workshops gave the children the opportunity to listen to stories and achievements and they were able to ask questions about potential future careers. The children all came away feeling very inspired! Another fifteen children visited Warwick University to learn more about university life. First, they participated in an engineering workshop, where they had to build the tallest tower they could out of paper. The tower had to have a working light at the top so it required a lot of problem-solving to ensure the circuit was long enough! After that, the children learnt about different aspects of university, including the range of courses and societies available to them. They were given the opportunity to ask current university students questions about the application process and their subjects. They ended the day with a tour of the campus and completed a sculpture trail to see the lovely artwork in the area. Overall, the children had a great day and are excited about the prospect of going to university in the future!
Year 1 Visit the Library: In the week beginning 3rd March, Year 1 visited Bell Green Library. They were very excited and many children pointed out parts of the local area that they were familiar with. Once there, we met the librarian and learnt about the different books that they had, which included fiction, non-fiction and poetry. We had time to browse the books and read some of them and the librarian read some of her favourites to us too. We had such a great visit and we hope to return again next half term!

Mon 03 Mar 2025Cool to be Kind Week: Friday 28th February was the last day of Cool to be Kind week, which was a great success. Children were even kinder and more helpful than usual and achieved stickers for their actions. Examples of this were Lena in Year 3 helping her friend with a recorder and Joshua in Year 6 helping Miss Collins at dinner time. Well done everyone!
Bikeability: 5JK were excited to begin their Bikeability sessions on Friday 28th February. They were taught about how to stay safe when riding a bike by two of the instructors and could identify faults that would make a bike unsafe to ride, such as a worn tyre. The class are really looking forward to their session next week.
Year 6 Library Quiz: Over the last few months, a group of Year 6 children have been reading three different books ready to compete in a quiz at the local library. In preparation, they read the books and tried to remember all of the characters, settings and main events. On Thursday 27th February, they competed against three other schools in a quiz to see which team has the best knowledge of the books. Amazingly, our team won with a total of 35/40 points! They will now be competing in the final at the Central Library. Well done Year 6.

Mon 24 Feb 2025Dol-y-Moch: We welcomed back our Year 6 children on Friday 14th February. They spent an action-packed week at Dol-y-Moch, in Wales. They had the opportunity to participate in lots of exciting activities, including: canoeing, kayaking, rock scrambling, climbing mountains and exploring mines. Some children climbed up a waterfall inside a mine to reach the top of it! All of the children showed great resilience when facing new challenges and with a little encouragement, many were able to overcome their fears. The Dol-y-Moch staff commented on what a resilient, respectful and determined group of children we had in Year 6. If you would like to see photographs of the children during their adventures, there are lots on the Moat House X (Twitter) account, which you can find: @Moat_House
Year 6 Visit to Leicester: On Thursday 13th February, the Year 6 children who did not go to Dol-y-Moch went to the Leicester Outdoor Pursuit Centre. The instructors were great and showed everyone how to safely complete the activities and supported the children to improve. Everyone had a go at the climbing walls and holding the safety ropes. All of the children made improvements and got a bit better and higher with each new climb. In the afternoon, the children found their inner 'Robin Hoods' during their archery sessions. Everyone had a fantastic time, despite the chilly and muddy conditions.
Safety Seymour in Year 2 and Year 5: Safety Seymour is a fun and colourful character, who has an important message to share about gas safety in the home, and the dangers of Carbon Monoxide (or CO) poisoning in particular. The sessions, on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th February, focused on educating children in a fun and engaging way on the dangers of carbon monoxide, what the symptoms are and also how to stay carbon monoxide safe. All of the children took home a goody bag with the Year 2 children receiving a carbon monoxide alarm, whilst the Year 5 children were directed to a link so that they can request an alarm for themselves. Additional information can be found via www.safetyseymour.co.uk .
Kabaddi World Cup: On Tuesday 11th February, Year 5 took part in a workshop around the upcoming Kabaddi World Cup. This competition is normally held in India but this year it will be held in several places, one of which is Coventry. The children learned about the rules and history of the sport and then produced collages, which will be used as artwork during the event. Year 5 had a great time and are looking forward to the tournament starting in March.
Safer Internet Day: This year’s Safer Internet Day theme was about protecting yourself and others from scams online. In assemblies on Tuesday 11th February, children were made aware of some of the scams that may arise, whilst they are online. They saw examples of these, which included; adverts offering something for free, emails with a suspicious link or a pop-up message telling us we are a lucky winner. The children were able to recognise that if it sounds too good to be true, then it is probably a scam and they should ask for help from a trusted adult. Please see this website for any further support about keeping children safe online: https://saferinternet.org.uk/

We discussed all of the different ways we could help save water and Year 4 enjoyed a workshop all about the different stages, as water is cleaned for our use. During the workshop, the children learned lots about what you can and can't put down the sink or toilet. Did you know, you shouldn't wash sauces down the sink? We also found out some things they find at Severn Trent, like jewellery, nappies and even pet fish! It was fascinating to learn more about the cleaning process and the children thoroughly enjoyed it.
School Council Visit: On Thursday 7th February, our School Council were lucky enough to visit the Council House in the city centre. They met the Lord Mayor (Councillor Mal Mutton) and the Lady Mayoress (Maggie Hickman), who answered lots of questions about their roles and gave the children a tour of the special rooms in the Council House. The children were fascinated by the chambers and had lots of questions to ask about the Lord Mayor’s roles and responsibilities, which mainly consist of promoting Coventry far and wide about the amazing city that it is! Mon 20 Jan 2025Ofsted: I'd like to thank everyone for their conduct during our Ofsted inspection in the week beginning 13th January. They were very impressed by the children's behaviour, attitudes and maturity. I am confident that we will get a favourable report which we will share when it's released in a few weeks’ time. Thanks, too, to everyone who took the time to complete the online survey.
Healthy Eating Week: In the week beginning 13th January, our children took part in Healthy Eating Week, where there was a focus on learning about the benefits of eating healthily. The children learnt that it is important to eat a balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates and plenty of fruit, vegetables and water and that treats can be enjoyed in moderation. We hope that they can encourage everyone at home to adopt good food habits to benefit the whole family.
3EW’s Class Assembly: 3EW treated us to an amazing assembly on Friday 17th January, which was all about the Stone Age. We got to travel back in time to the Stone Age Era and witness the show, ‘Stone Age has got Talent’ which was hosted by our very own Ant and Dec! We all got to learn about how people lived during the Stone Age, such as how they created cave art, tools to hunt and gather food, as well as the fashion at the time. We also got to hear an amazing rendition of ‘Stone Age Will Rock You’, which was performed brilliantly by the children. All of 3EW spoke with clarity and confidence and were amazing throughout!

Mon 13 Jan 2025New Year's Resolutions: Every year I challenge the children to think of something they could improve at school and at home and adopt these as resolutions. Many have told me that they intend to work more quickly, write more neatly, have a better attitude or be a better friend. I'd like to wish everybody the best of luck with their resolutions. I would hope that you might see the benefit at home too with tidier, more helpful children who argue less with their brothers or sisters. I shared that I aim to practise my saxophone more regularly and started at lunchtime, in the dining room, which both I, and the children, enjoyed.
UK Parliament Assembly: On Tuesday 7th January, our Key Stage 2 children listened to and participated in an assembly led by Clare Mullin. This was very informative and explained to the children how a Member of Parliament (MP) is elected in the United Kingdom. The children were interested to learn that Mary Creagh is Coventry East’s MP and that she has a responsibility to represent the people living in the East of Coventry, at parliament. Clare explained that MPs debate on various issues, including health, housing and education and they create new laws. The children were invited to share their views and the assembly finished with a quiz to find out how much the children had learnt and remembered.

Aladdin: On Tuesday 17th December, we were lucky enough to watch a fantastic pantomime called Aladdin (oh no we didn’t………oh yes we did!) There was a nasty man called Abanazar and he was being very mean to people, especially Aladdin. Our hero was brilliant, he saved the day and was able to win the heart of the princess too! The actors were really good and silly and the pantomime was enjoyed by everyone. We can’t wait until next year to see another pantomime. Written by Callum and Ronnie (1RW).
