Kapsch Careers Talk:     We were fortunate to have a visit from Shari, a Business Manager at Kapsch on Friday 2nd February. They are responsible for the software that manages smart motorways and a variety of other traffic solutions, eg traffic lights 'knowing' when to change as a car approaches and early warning of accidents on roads which allow Satnavs to suggest alternative routes. Shari explained how an interest in IT and coding could lead to someone working as a software engineer or coder at companies like Kapsch. KS2 children listened with interest as she described the jobs that are available at Kapsch and what children would need to study at primary and secondary school to prepare them for a job in IT.

Non-Uniform Day:           Thank you to everyone for your support in wearing non-uniform on Friday 2nd February in exchange for providing cat food and/or treats for our local charity “Fagin’s Waifs and Strays.” Kirsty and Pat will be delighted with your contributions.

Read Write Inc in Reception: On Wednesday 31st January, we welcomed our Reception parents in to school to find out how we teach phonics at Moat House, using Read Write Inc. They also enjoyed observing their own children participating in their phonics lesson.

Star School: In the week starting Monday 29th January, Evie, Hishaam, Ashfaina (Year 4) and Aisha (Year 2) made their radio debut on BBC’s CWR Star School feature. Everyday this week, we have enjoyed listening to our children talk about their views on the news, as well as what they love about Moat House - we even heard from some of our superstar Teaching Assistants: Mrs Bivens and Mrs Shirley, who pretended they were shy about being on the radio! If you missed it, you can catch up on BBC Sounds.

Dol-y-Moch:    From Wednesday 24th January, our Year 6 children spent an action-packed week at Dol-y-Moch. They had the opportunity to participate in lots of exciting activities, including: canoeing, kayaking, rock scrambling, climbing mountains and exploring mines. Some children climbed up a waterfall inside a mine to reach the top of it! All of the children showed great resilience when facing new challenges and with a little encouragement, many were able to overcome their fears. The Dol-y-Moch staff commented on what a resilient, respectful and determined group of children we had in Year 6. If you would like to see photographs of the children during their adventures, there are lots on the Moat House X (Twitter) account, which you can find: @Moat_House

2EW’s Class Assembly: Thanks to 2EW, who shared a wonderful assembly with us on Friday 26th January called ‘Your Body’s got Talent’. They have been learning all about the human body and the assembly consisted of three ‘acts’ which really showcased what the children have been learning. We learnt about the bones, the heart and the digestive system. We even welcomed special guest presenters Ant and Dec, as well as Mr Black, played brilliantly by Lochan!

Year 6 Visit to Leicester:         On Thursday 25th January, some of our Year 6 children went to the Leicester Outdoor Pursuit Centre. Our instructors were great, showing us how to safely do everything and supporting us to improve. Everyone had a go at climbing on the climbing walls and holding the safety ropes. We all got a bit better and climbed higher with each go we had. In the afternoon, we found our inner 'Robin Hoods' during our archery sessions. Everyone had a fantastic time, despite all the mud!

Fagins Waifs and Strays:        Kirsty and Pat visited our phase assemblies on Wednesday 24th January and told us all about the cats that they help; they explained that stray and feral cats often need help and their charity enables these cats to receive medical care and attention.

Sky Blue Links: On Thursday 18th January, Year 6 took part in an anti-racism and discrimination workshop, which was also run by Sky Blues in the Community, with the help of a local police officer. The children were encouraged to discuss some of the key issues with racism and were shown examples of campaigns that aim to stop racism in football and in the wider community. The children listened thoughtfully and joined in with discussions surrounding the issues raised during the workshop. Following the workshop, the children were given the task of designing a poster to raise awareness of the importance of ending racism. The top ten designs will be displayed around the school and the children will win free tickets to watch a Coventry City match at the CBS arena.

Finally, they finished off by playing circle football, which they thoroughly enjoyed!

Assembly Visitor:       Brian Nash, the vicar of St Chads church and one of our governors, came into school on Monday 15th January to share a story from the Bible. He told us the story of Gideon and about how he became a brilliant warrior and defeated the army of the Midianites to save his people. There were actions that everyone had to join in with which made the story even more interesting. The children really enjoyed the story and joined in well with their parts. Thank you, Brian.

Healthy Eating Week:  In the week beginning 15th January, our children took part in Healthy Eating Week, where there was a focus on learning about the benefits of eating healthily. The children have learnt that it is important to eat a balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates and plenty of fruit, vegetables and water and that treats can be enjoyed in moderation. We hope that they can encourage everyone at home to adopt good food habits to benefit the whole family.

New Year's Resolutions:   Every year I challenge the children to think of something they could improve at school and at home and adopt these as resolutions. Many have told me that they intend to work more quickly, write more neatly, have a better attitude or be a better friend. I'd like to wish everybody the best of luck with their resolutions. I would hope that you might see the benefit at home too with tidier, more helpful children who argue less with their brothers or sisters. I shared that I aim to practise my guitar more regularly and started at lunchtime, in the dining room, which both I, and the children, enjoyed.

Young Voices: On Wednesday 10th January, some of our children from KS2 participated in a Young Voices concert at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham. During the show, they sang a range of songs, including hits from the films 'Matilda' and 'Moana' and a medley of music all about walking, to a full audience and with children from lots of other schools. Moat House children were particularly fantastic at singing 'The Moment' and 'Today is going to be a great day'. They were able to work with a conductor, as well as sing and dance alongside some very talented performers, including Drummer Nandi Bushell, who is only 13 years old and dance group Urban Strides. They particularly enjoyed learning to rap with multi award winning Rapper MC Grammar! Everyone had a fantastic day, danced the night away and did Moat House proud!

Joy of Moving in Year 4:        On Tuesday 9th January, Year 4 started a five week programme with Sky Blues in the Community, which is called 'Joy of Movement'.  This week, they learnt what Physical Activity is and they wrote their own definition of this. Then, they conducted a pulse rate experiment to calculate their resting heart and their heart rate after physical activity. After that, they took part in a physical activity session and they thoroughly enjoyed playing scarecrow together. They cannot wait for next week's session!

Rock Steady:    On Tuesday 9th January, Ben from Rock Steady demonstrated his musical talents by playing some familiar rock, songs using a range of different instruments including the guitar, keyboard and drums. Over the next few weeks, he is going to be working with some of our children to form five of our very own Moat House rock bands! The children will practise playing a chosen instrument and will be ready to perform to us in a special assembly. We can’t wait!

4MW’s Class Assembly:             It was lovely to watch 4MW’s class assembly on Thursday 7th December. The children impressed us with their learning about Ancient Greece and really brought this to life with some great acting by Sebastian, as Zeus and Jan as Prometheus. The children shared their high quality non-chronological reports, .as well as their knowledge of the 7 times table through learning a song. We all then joined in with a rendition of Mamma Mia as we left the hall. Thanks to 4MW, as well as Miss Wooding and Miss Jola for a super assembly.

Christmas Fayre:   On Wednesday 6th December, our Christmas Fayre was a resounding success and Santa’s grotto was a particular hit with children big and small! Each class had the challenge to run their own stall with a prize being awarded to the stall which raised the most money. We would like to thank you for your support, as well as your donations and we will let you know of the total amount raised in a future newsletter.

Year 6 at AT7:    On Tuesday 5th December, thirty Year 6 children competed in an indoor athletics competition at the AT7 centre. The events they participated in included: relay races, obstacle races, long jump, triple jump, javelin and many others! Overall, we finished in 4th place. Although we didn't win the competition, all of the children tried really hard in their events and demonstrated some great teamwork throughout the day. They were perfectly behaved and we were all very proud of their efforts. Well done Year 6!

Symphony Orchestra of India   A group of Year 6 children went to Warwick Arts Centre on Wednesday 29th November to see (and hear) The Imperial March from Star Wars, Brahms Piano Concerto No 2 and Suite from Parsifal by Wagner. The orchestra were fantastic and we got to hear some brilliant musicians. The huge bass drum, used in Star Wars, caught Liam's eye and Hridayesha was particularly impressed by one of the violinists. All the children enjoyed the concert and were a credit to the school.

Phonics Parents’ Meeting:        Thank you to the Reception and Year 1 parents who attended our phonics information afternoon on Wednesday 29th November. Temporary Classroom:       Over the next few weeks, we are having a temporary classroom delivered and installed opposite the Year 2 classrooms (where the see-saw is). Can we ask that you follow any safety signs or instructions as it is set up to keep you and your children safe. We will be using it to teach an additional Year 2 class due to the number of children in Coventry who need school places.

6ST’s Class Assembly:       6ST shared a very informative assembly with us on Friday 24th November all about World War One. We were fascinated to hear that children were given important jobs during the war, such as delivering milk and medical supplies. 6ST were able to recall many of these facts from memory, demonstrating their amazing retrieval practice, which is a whole school focus at the moment. Milan and Juliette read out the diary entries that they had written, from the perspective of a soldier. We all enjoyed the children sharing the poppies that they had made and hearing them sing an adapted version of “Pack up your Troubles.”

Cinema Visits:     On Thursday 23rd November, Year 2 enjoyed a trip to the Showcase Cinema to watch Epic Tails. It is the story of a mouse with dreams of travel and big adventure. Year 2 have been learning about the Romans in History and found many similarities between what they have learned and the setting of the film, which was in Greece. Our Reception children were treated to a wonderful cinema experience where they saw two films: the Smeds and the Smods and Superworm. For some children, this was the first time they had been to a cinema but all were amazingly well behaved and were enthralled by the experience.  Of course the trip wouldn't be complete without popcorn and a drink, which was thoroughly enjoyed and munched down during the film. Thanks to Rugby Cineworld for their friendly and welcoming staff! On Monday 20th November, 4NL visited the Odeon cinema in town as part of the Into Film Festival. They were very excited and thoroughly enjoyed watching Super Mario Bros 2. All of the children were exceptionally well-behaved and they showed excellent manners. At the end of the film, the children broke out into a round of applause and they sang along to the ‘Peaches’ song too. They had a fabulous day!

Safe Touch Workshop:       On Monday 20th November, 6CB participated in a workshop run by the charity CRASAC. Throughout the session, the children considered different scenarios where they may feel scared and then worked in groups to decide which of the following categories the scenario fell into: 'fun to feel scared', 'risking on purpose', 'unsafe' or 'safe'. Some of the scenarios considered were: going to the dentist, riding on a rollercoaster, being approached by a stranger and going to the dentist. The children then discussed the meaning of 'personal space' and explored how it feels when somebody enters your personal space. All of the children showed great maturity during the workshop and were all able to identify the best steps to take in situations where they may feel unsafe.

Blue Light Visit:                      On Friday 17th November, we were lucky enough to enjoy a visit from our local police force. They came into assembly and shared the equipment that they have to carry at all times to keep themselves and others safe. They also brought a van with them and many of our children were fortunate enough to get up close to see the flashing blue lights and hear the noisy sirens – we hope it didn’t disturb our neighbours too much!

Children in Need:     On Friday 17th November, our children were given the opportunity to purchase toys or books from our Children in Need toy sale. The children enjoyed browsing amongst the wonderful donations that you provided and all of the proceeds will be passed on to Children in Need. We must give a huge thank you to Mrs Kriaun, Mrs Walker and Jodie and Noreen (from Hays) for all their organisation and support.

Cinema Visits: Year 3 and 4 went to see Mario Brothers 2 at the cinema on Wednesday 15th November. They were incredibly well behaved and really enjoyed the film. They all clapped at the end of the film and were so grateful for the opportunity to visit the cinema, as well as the snacks they were provided with. It was a lovely morning and a wonderful experience for all. Listening to the children singing 'Peaches' was definitely the highlight!  On the same day, Year 5 visited the Odeon cinema in the city centre and watched Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. All of the children loved the film and especially enjoyed eating their popcorn and sweets as they were watching it! They were brilliantly behaved and represented Moat House really well.

Free Toothbrushes:     We have been fortunate enough to be donated with enough toothbrushes and toothpaste for all of our children. This has been the perfect opportunity to remind our children about the tooth and mouth hygiene and the importance of brushing our teeth at least twice a day. These were given out to the children on Wednesday 15th November.

Safe Touch Workshop:       On Monday 13th November, the charity CRASAC came to work with the children in 6ST. During the session, the children discussed various situations, such as riding a rollercoaster or being approached by a stranger, and decided how safe or unsafe they would feel in these scenarios. The children were then able to identify early warning signs to understand when they felt unsafe. The workshop went on to discuss personal space and other important topics, including knowing that your body belongs to you. 6ST showed maturity and respect during the workshop and were engaged throughout the afternoon.
