Year 6 Litter Picking in the Local Area

As part of their geography topic, ‘British Geographical Issues’, Year 6 learn about a wide range of challenges affecting the UK, including flooding, pollution and litter. The children explore the causes and effects of these issues and consider ways that communities and individuals can make a positive difference.

To put their learning into action and have a real impact on their local environment, the children take part in a litter pick in the local area. Equipped with gloves and litter-pickers, they work together to tidy streets, parks and green spaces, collecting rubbish and recycling where possible.

This hands-on experience not only helps improve the local community but also reinforces important lessons about environmental responsibility, teamwork and citizenship. The children leave the activity with a stronger understanding of how small actions can contribute to a cleaner, safer and healthier local environment.
