Black History Month
Black History Month in Year One!
To celebrate Black History Month 2025 in Year Three, we explored the power of unity through Lanisha Butterfield’s Flower Block, connecting its message to this year’s theme: “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.” Our sunflower creations symbolised resilience, growth, and the beauty of community.
🌻 Celebrating Black History Month 2025 with Flower Block
This October, our Black History Month celebration was rooted in creativity, reflection, and community spirit. Inspired by Flower Block, a heartwarming story by Lanisha Butterfield, we explored how small acts—like planting a flower—can blossom into powerful movements of togetherness. The book’s central message, that a little thing can bring a community together, resonated deeply with us and sparked meaningful conversations about unity, kindness, and collective strength.
📚 Why Flower Block Matters
Lanisha Butterfield’s story isn’t just about flowers—it’s about hope, connection, and the ripple effect of compassion. As we read, we discussed how communities thrive when individuals take initiative, care for one another, and celebrate shared values. This tied beautifully into the spirit of Black History Month, where we honour the contributions of Black individuals and communities who have stood firm in the face of adversity and created lasting change.
🖤 Black History Month 2025: Standing Firm in Power and Pride
This year’s theme, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” is a tribute to the resilience and strength of the Black community across generations. It encourages us to reflect on the legacies of leaders, activists, artists, and everyday changemakers who have shaped history and continue to inspire progress. From civil rights pioneers to contemporary voices of empowerment, we celebrate those who have uplifted their communities and challenged injustice with courage and pride.
🎨 Sunflowers of Strength
To bring our learning to life, we created vibrant sunflower artworks inspired by Flower Block. Each sunflower represented a unique message of hope, growth, and solidarity. Just as sunflowers turn toward the sun, our creations symbolized turning toward a brighter future—one built on inclusion, respect, and shared purpose.
🌍 Why Community Matters During Black History Month
Community is at the heart of Black History Month. It’s a time to come together, learn from one another, and honour the stories that have often been overlooked. By connecting Flower Block to this celebration, we recognised that every voice matters, and that even the smallest actions can help build a more just and compassionate world.
