Music in the classrooms.
In music this term, so far, the pupils have experienced chair drumming (year 4), recorders (year 2), singing (all years), listening and appraising (all years), writing and performing raps (years 4 and 5), learning to play brass instruments (year 6) and investigating and analysing different genres.
Each half term the children listen to different genres of music as they enter and exit the hall for the daily assembly.
These are the genres that they will hear this year:
Autumn 1 – Classical
Autumn 2 – Motown
Spring 1 – Pop
Spring 2 – World Music
Summer 1 – Musicals
Summer 2 – Gospel Music
Assessment in music.
Although music is not ‘assessed’ as such, the pupils are asked to reflect and evaluate their knowledge and skill every half term on different aspects of the subject that they have been focusing on from the national curriculum.
We use ‘I can…’ statements for reflection.
The aspects include;
I can sing a tune with expression.
I can begin to identify and describe the different purposes of music.
I can play clear notes on an instrument.
I can improvise using repeated patterns.
I can use symbols to represent sounds.
I can compose music which meets specific criteria.
I can recognise the work of at least one famous composer.
I can describe, compare and evaluate music using musical vocabulary.
In the week beginning 5th March, we held our very first Music Week. It was a joy to hear all of the singing, music making and excitement of the children around the school. They learnt about music and life from the 1950s to the 1980s. On Thursday 8th March, members of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire came to visit year 5 and 6. They are recruiting for an exciting new free creative music-making programme on Saturdays for young people aged 10-16. It will be held at Sydney Stringer from April and is free. The musicians performed and created music with the children and it was a brilliant hour. The children had fun and were very creative. Year 5 took part in this years KS2 Morning of Music which was hosted by Moat House Primary.
The Theme was SPACE!!!
We had astronauts...
and we had aliens.
Vicki Clayton, our amazing peripatetic music teacher started us off on our intergalactic journey with a few warm up songs.
We then travelled to the Milky way and visited the planets. We experienced some turbulence but our spaceship was expertly guided home by Miss Bird and Miss Grant. Our technical engineer, Mr. Gilmore, came across some problems but he overcame them…eventually!!!
We all had a great time singing the special songs.
In their music lessons at Moat House Primary, pupils will be taught to:
•Play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression
•Improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the inter-related dimensions of music
•Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory
•Use and understand staff and other musical notations
•Appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians
•Develop and understanding of the history of music.
The children at Moat House Primary School enjoy weekly music lessons in which they both listen to and produce music.

Pupils at Moat House also have the opportunity to take part in musical opportunities such as KS1 or KS2 Mornings of Music…
…or Young voices in which they join thousands of other pupils across the country to make up a choir at the NEC and perform in a concert.
